If selected for this position, you will be working for the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, located in London, Kentucky.
This position has a full performance level of GS-12.

Medical Examination required prior to appointment. Subject to Financial Disclosure requirements. As a Surface Mining Reclamation Specialist, you will:
Perform the full range of inspection and enforcement activities to assure that mining operations are conducted to protect the environment and return the affected lands to valuable uses. This may require inspection and enforcement under Federal law or referral of cases to state or tribal regulatory authorities. Direct Federal enforcement may occur in states/tribes which do not have an approved program or on Federal lands where state cooperative agreements do not exist.
Serve as an authorized representative of the Secretary of the Interior and perform comprehensive inspection and enforcement duties;
Participate with reclamation specialists of a higher grade in conducting inspection and enforcement evaluations at mines and related facilities; assist the field solicitors in preparing for litigation;
Prepare written reports, analyses, letters, etc. and input for the production of graphics and visual aids to support inspection and enforcement activities;
Provide advice on reclamation techniques and design and construction techniques; promote sound surface coal mining control and reclamation by participating in meetings and conferences;
Monitor state and tribal programs; and conduct oversight and evaluations and participates in special studies of the approved state/tribal program.

Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that are typically in or directly related to the position be filled.
